MENTAL ILLNESS AS A FASHION TREND

"Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking, and behavior."

In this generation, teenagers are most likely having problems with mental illness. To some, it is a push to commit suicide. Common mental illnesses to teenagers are depression, anxiety, eating disorders (e.g. bulimia, anorexia nervosa), ADHD, insomnia, and more. This kind of stuff is not a joke. But for some people, they claim to have an illness, because to them it's a  fashion trend

It's okay to feel "depressed" if your dog died, or if your partner broke up with you or if you didn't make it to an audition you really wanted to get in to. But what is not okay is referring to your "depression" as serious clinical depression. Self-diagnosing is never the right way to go. Seek professional help so that you'll get the treatment that you need. Teenagers like to announce on social media that they are depressed and they want to die. They think that there silly puppy-love heartbreak is already a form of mental illness. Silly, I know; they want to die because of that. They should be sensitive to depressed people because they don't know what it feels like to be depressed. They think that people sympathize with them but in all honesty, people know that clinically depressed people don't announce their illness, because having a mental illness isn't something to be proud of. They wish to get rid of it.

People who are mentally sick are more humble than those depressed wannabes. Why? They don't go around in social media and be like "I am depressed, I wanna die" unlike those depressed wannabes. As hard as it already is, they're fighting to be okay; they're fighting to live every day, even if it's an impossible task for them. Depression comes a long way; you don't get it one snap of a finger and you can't heal it with one snap either.

It is sad to think that it's not that easy to cure mental disorders and that people have to deal with it. It's sad how these illnesses even had to begin with. But it's sadder that there are people out there who want to be depressed, anxious, and to be whatever the hell they want to be so that people will pity them. I have a friend whose life isn't that great. Her mom went to Qatar for 3 months, she was forced to switch schools and again, she switched schools on the second semester of the school year when we were in 8th grade, she was referred to as the "shadow" of her best friend of several years, her dad isn't by her side and is cruel to her mother and she is very insecure of herself; which resulted to her sadness. Every day, she tries to be okay. Every day. she still breathes. Every day, she has to live in a toxic household. She has been suicidal for as long as I can remember, but she remained strong. We survive and fight this world together. She's my rock and I'm happy to live in this world with her.

Clinical Depression is not a joke nor something cool to have. This is the reason why I want to be a psychiatrist; I want to be one out of the thousands of hope in our future generation. I just hope that in our next generation, we value our mental health like how we value our likes on social media.
